Leicester ended a 13-game winless streak with a 2-0 victory over Southampton in a Premier League farewell featuring five Nigerian internationals bidding goodbye to top-flight football.

Saturday’s Premier League clash at the King Power Stadium was more than just a dead rubber between already-relegated Leicester City and Southampton.

It was a poignant send-off for five Nigerian internationals as both clubs bid farewell to top-flight football, at least for now.

In a match rich with Super Eagles subplots, Leicester’s Wilfred Ndidi and Southampton’s Lesley Ugochukwu started for their respective sides, while Paul Onuachu, Joe Aribo, and Caleb Okoli featured from the bench.

For these Nigerians, the fixture was a final chance to impress on the Premier League stage, with summer moves on the horizon for those hoping to avoid a drop to the Championship.

Despite the lack of stakes, the game carried emotional weight, with national team selection and future transfers in the balance.

The Nigerian contingent ensured there was plenty to play for, even as both clubs faced the reality of relegation.

Leicester seized the moment to end a 13-match winless run, powered by Jamie Vardy’s milestone goal.

The Foxes legend thumped home a superb half-volley in the 17th minute, matching Robin van Persie’s Premier League tally with his 199th goal for the club.

Jordan Ayew doubled the lead in the second half, rifling a low shot through a crowded box after his initial free-kick was blocked, sealing a 2-0 victory for the hosts.

The match also saw a bizarre interruption when referee David Webb was accidentally injured by Jordan Ayew, leading to a brief pause as fourth official Sam Barrott took over officiating duties.

For the Nigerian quintet, this match was a shop window. With the Championship looming, the Super Eagles stars will hope their Premier League performances keep them in the international frame-and perhaps earn them a swift return to the elite.

Leicester’s win provided a rare bright spot in a difficult season, while Southampton and their Nigerian talents look ahead to an uncertain summer and the challenges of England’s second tier.
