The Liverpool manager took the opportunity to settle some scores with Gary Neville who has been one of his biggest critic in recent years

Jurgen Klopp has aimed a subtle dig at Gary Neville and his brother Phil after the former inaccurately claimed that the Mac Allister brothers were the first to play against each other.

Earlier this week, the German coach called for a replay of the Premier League match between Liverpool and Tottenham after VAR mistakenly ruled out Luis Diaz's goal in the 34th minute.

Gary Neville then hit out at the manager for his bizarre suggestion, describing it as “madness”

"Now we’ve seen they want a replay! That's madness," Gary said on Sky Sports.

In classic Klopp version, he used the situation as fuel to hit back at Gary  when quizzed by a journalist about how he witnessed a battle between two siblings during their Europa League clash against Union SG.

Alexis Mac Allister came up against his brother Kevin Mac Allister during Liverpool's 2-0 win over Union Saint Gilloise in the Europa League on Thursday.

In the post-match press conference, Klopp erroneously claimed: "They are doing 25 interviews in a row now together. It’s the first time that two brothers played against each other in world football or whatever it felt like, it’s a really nice story.”

When corrected that Gary and Phil also played against each other when the latter played for Everton, Klopp said that “no one was interested” in the battle between the two.

“Well nobody was interested in that obviously. Sorry, that was a penalty I had to take that.”

Alexis revealed after the match that it was the first time he was playing against Kevin and it was an emotional moment for their father.

“I've played against my older brother before but never against Kevin - it was special. My dad was here too, he knows what it means, he cried a little bit," he said.

It is not the first time Klopp and Gary Neville have had a go at each other. In 2021, Klopp was infuriated by Gary’s sentiments on Liverpool’s famous ‘you’ll  never walk alone’ anthem.

"Gary Neville speaks about 'You'll Never Walk Alone', that should be almost forbidden, to be honest. We have a lot of rights to sing that anthem, it's our anthem and he doesn't understand it anyway. I really don't want these kind of things because it's not fair,” Klopp said.

"I understand that all the talk is around and I don't like it as well. But I don't talk about other clubs like this. You can be emotional but I wish Gary Neville would be in a hot-seat somewhere, not everywhere where the most money is.

"He was at Man United where the most money is, Sky where the most money is."
