Homeboyz will have to beat or manage a score draw away to Al Hilal in order to qualify and face Rayon Sports of Rwanda in the second leg.

Kakamega Homeboyz were unable to make their home advantage count as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Libyan outfit Al Hilal Benghazi in a CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round fixture staged at the Nyayo National Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The game started evenly, with no side really managing to get the better of each other in the opening eight minutes.

In the ninth minute, a huge penalty appeal from Al Hilal Benghazi was waved away by the center referee, making the homeside escape a close shave.

Homeboyz got their first real chance of the match in the 17th minute when the Al Hilal keeper Husamedin Ahmed was forced into making a superb reflex save to prevent Moses Shumah's header from finding the back of the net.

Three minutes later, the Al Hilal keeper was forced into making another save to deny Estone Esiye, with the ball appearing to cross the line.

The players were aghast, making claims that the ball had crossed the line but it was in vain. Homeboyz continued dominating proceedings, which was forcing Al Hilal into applying time-wasting tactics.

In the 43rd minute, Erick Ambunya made a timely interception to deny Al Hilal what looked like a clear goalscoring opportunity.

The second half started very lively with both sides having chances to break the deadlock. The first was from Al Hilal, who attempted a long shot from a distance, but it sailed wide off the mark.

Homeboyz also attempted to score themselves when they tried to work the ball into the box, but their dilly-dallies outside the box allowed Al Hilal to get back into shape to deal with the threat.

Patrick Odhiambo's outfit were certainly finding their groove and in the 62nd minute, made a nice attempt at goal through Esiye, but the ball was deflected away for a corner kick.

Abana Beingo had a glorious chance when substitute Oscar Paul found himself one on one with the keeper, but his tame shot sailed wide off the mark.

In the 84th minute, another chance went begging when they constructed a nice attacking move from the back courtesy of keeper Farouk Shikalo, before it landed at the feet of Brian Wekesa, who hit a tame shot straight into the hands of Ahmed.

The biggest chance of the game went begging in the 87th minute when Paul had yet another opportunity to break the deadlock after he had controlled the ball immaculately in the box, but his shot was deflected away for a corner kick.

Homeboyz’ profligacy nearly counted against them in the dying minutes of the match, as Al Hilal, who had won a freekick in a dangerous area, executed it nicely, causing confusion.

They wasted two more chances in the 89th minute, first from Hillary Juma, whose attempted shot sailed wide, before Paul missed yet another opportunity by hitting the ball wide
