Kenya's rich music scene could be the unexpected spark to reunite Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy with his long-lost passion for music.

Believe it or not, South Africa’s Benni McCarthy was a musician long before he became one of the most successful African coaches.

Although the veteran tactician has not released any music in over two decades, his arrival in Kenya might reignite his passion for his first love.

During his time here, Benni McCarthy will get a taste of Kenya’s vibrant music scene, including a rich mix of traditional, contemporary, and urban sounds.

The Harambee Stars coach looked up to Kiernan ‘AKA’ Forbes, a man who he believes would have motivated him to get back to doing music.

Benni McCarthy revealed that he and AKA were very close, and they would have conversations from time to time.

The former Bafana Bafana star was devastated to hear about the passing of AKA, revealing that he was the only one who would bring out the musician in him, and now that he was gone, it would be difficult for him to go back to doing music.

As quoted by the Times Live, Benni McCarthy said: "The only person who could have probably got me back into music or doing anything in music was the late AKA. He was special, and we had a bond…so we would always be in contact.

"I was completely devastated when I found out what happened. I don’t think there is a person in the music industry who can convince me to get back into music. If I were to do anything, it would have been with Kiernan.”

Meanwhile, AKA was shot dead outside a restaurant in Durban along with his close friend, Tebello 'Tibz' Motsoane, in February 2023.

One of the most famous Benni McCarthy songs was produced in 1998. He collaborated with Kwaito stars TKZee to produce a song titled Shibobo.

In December 2012, Benni McCarthy also worked with producer Dome and a hip-hop crew, Team Tswara, on Viva Africa. He dedicated the song to ‘Team Bafana’ and the Africa Nations Cup tournament.

"My wish is for Africa to excel and to give all the youths on the continent the opportunity they deserve in the areas of education, sports, music and so on,” Benni McCarthy said of the song at the time.

"The message in the song really encourages Africans to believe in themselves, to work together, to go higher and see no limit."

Benni McCarthy: Could Kenya be the spark?

While Benni McCarthy has been vocal about the late AKA being the only person who could truly reignite his passion for music, perhaps Kenya holds the potential to surprise him.

In Nairobi, music is not just a sound, it is a lifestyle. Benni McCarthy might just find himself reconnecting with the freedom that music once gave him.

It might come in the form of a jam session with a local artist like Bien or Bahati, or just a beat. And even if AKA was the only one who could have brought out the musician in Benni McCarthy, maybe Kenya’s unique musical heartbeat could awaken something new.
