Erling Haaland has admitted that Manchester City have fallen short of their high standards this season and must rediscover their hunger to bounce back next year.

Manchester City have endured a torrid season, with star striker Erling Haaland admitting that they set a standard and failed to live up to it.

Manchester City won the Premier League title for four consecutive years, 2020 to 2023, but have struggled to make an impact in the 2024/25 season.

They currently sit fourth in the Premier League table with just 65 points, with Liverpool leading the table with 83 points. Arsenal and Newcastle United are second and third with 68 and 66 points.

Manchester City also struggled to make an impact in the Champions League and the Carabao Cup. In the Champions League, they were eliminated by Real Madrid, losing 3–6 on aggregate after being beaten home and away in the new knockout phase play-offs.

This marked the first season since the 2012–13 season where Man City failed to reach the last 16 of the competition.

Manchester City exited the Carabao Cup following a disastrous five-match losing streak in October and November last year.

Manchester City have had injury struggles that might have potentially affected their drive, but Erling Haaland believes that is just an excuse.

Erling Haaland explained that the players are not motivated to play well, noting that he has also not shown up in the way he wanted to for the club.

“You can find excuses in all of this - injuries, many injuries and at bad times - but in the end we haven't been performing well enough,” Erling Haaland told ESPN.

“We haven't had the hunger inside of us. I haven't been good enough, I haven't helped the team enough.”

Next season, Erling Haaland pointed out that the players need to bounce back and rightfully take what belongs to them.

Erling Haaland added that Manchester City set a standard, and they have to live up to it, hence the need to bounce back next season.

“The club has set standards, and the bar is so high, which means this season is a catastrophic season - that says it all. Next season, we need to find something inside our stomach again to attack the season,” he added.

This season, Erling Haaland only managed to score 30 times, and his form has caused worry among many of Man City’s fans.

With two matches against Bournemouth and Fulham remaining, Manchester City will be looking to make an impact, with Erling Haaland already having confirmed that they have not been at their best.

Manchester City have lost nine times in the league this season, and for them to bounce back and reclaim their title, a lot has to change next season.
