The Gor Mahia FC vs Murang’a Seal match came exactly a week after Ko’Ogalo’s league title hopes took a massive turn following a barren draw at St. Sebastian Park in Murang’a.

Gor, the 11 times champions of the cup, have endured a difficult time trying to reclaim the trophy recently. Their last triumph was against AFC Leopards in a 4 – 1 penalty shootout in 2021.

Last season, Gor Mahia were eliminated in round 32 by the FKF Coast Regional league side Denmak FC. This season, Gor Mahia have also struggled with off-field issues, including changing coaches four times.

The match started on a low note with fans chanting the names of their favourite teams. Just before the sixth minute, Murang’a Seal found the back of the net courtesy of Michael Owen.

Gor Mahia struggled with faulty passes in the early stages of the match, with Murang’a Seal capitalising on that, giving them a run for their money. Philemon Otieno attempted another score but could not find the back of the net.

Murang’a Seal were on their toes in the first, looking very organised as they guarded their defense to the fullest, making it difficult for Gor Mahia to penetrate.

Gor Mahia also created scoring chances as the first half of the match intensified, but that was not enough to break the tight defense that Murang’a Seal had established. Murang’a Seal’s goalkeeper, Bonphas Munyasa, was also alert and did not let the ball go past him.

Coming into the second half of the match, Gor Mahia’s Stanley Omondi was benched. K’Ogalo started their campaign missing a very important, hitting the top bar of the goal post.

After moments of creating chances and missing out, second-half substitute Bryson Wangai equalised for Gor Mahia, scoring in the 59th minute. His goal was a wake-up call for Murang’a Seal, who had eased a bit.

Alpha Onyango added another goal for Gor Mahia in the 64th minute, putting K’Ogalo ahead. Murang’a Seal then equalised through Wilson Kamau in the 74th minute, making the scores 2-2 in the race against time and a slot in the final.

With an added four minutes that did not yield any difference, Gor Mahia and Murang’a Seal were forced to go into penalty shoots. Gor Mahia emerged as champions, scoring in all four penalties with Murang’a Seal missing one.
