Gor Mahia chairman Ambrose Rachier has confirmed that fate of tickets bought for the postponed Mashemeji Derby, now rescheduled for June 2 at Raila Odinga Stadium.

Gor Mahia chairman Ambrose Rachier has addressed the confusion surrounding ticket purchases for the much-anticipated Mashemeji Derby, initially scheduled for May 11 at Kasarani Stadium.

The fixture, which pits fierce rivals Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards, was postponed, yet many fans had already bought tickets online.

The rescheduled match is now set to take place on June 2 at the newly renovated Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay County, a shift that brings both logistical and financial changes.

Possible Refund for Fans?

Rachier emphasized that fans who purchased tickets for the original May 11 fixture will be entitled to refunds, citing the differences in planning and pricing between the two venues.

“The fans should be refunded because the terms of hosting the match at Raila Odinga Stadium will be completely different," Rachier told Nation Sports.

“We won’t charge the same amount as we had intended for the Nairobi game.”

With the move to Homa Bay, Gor Mahia aims to make the match accessible to fans in the region while adjusting to the realities of a new venue and its associated costs.

Safety Concerns at New Venue

Despite the excitement of bringing top-flight football to Homa Bay, Rachier expressed reservations about the safety of the Raila Odinga Stadium.

The facility is scheduled to host Madaraka Day celebrations on June 1, just a day before the derby.

“It is a risky thing to do, but what next? The league has to end and there is no venue,” he said, highlighting the challenges of securing an appropriate location.

Still, Rachier confirmed that Gor Mahia and the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) had agreed on the use of the stadium.

“We will have to do a lot of planning to ensure adequate safety during the match,” he noted, while also recognizing the benefit of playing the match closer to Gor Mahia’s fans in the Nyanza region.
