Victor Boniface's exiting start to Bundesliga start has seen him match the former Borussia Dortmund man's exploits

Nigerian striker Victor Boniface continued his exceptional start to life in the Bundesliga with another brace for Bayer Leverkusen against newly-promoted Heidenheim to write his name in the league’s history books next to icons like Erling Haaland.

Boniface has scored an incredible six goals in five Bundesliga appearances for Leverkusen and has also provided two assists in that period to earn himself the distinction of being one of the most in-form strikers on the planet.

A hat-trick of braces in two of the last three matches for his side has seen him climb to third in the league’s top scorers’ chart this season, behind only Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane and Stuttgart’s Serhou Guirassy.

Thanks to his penchant for scoring braces, Boniface equalled a Bundesliga record held by former Borussia Dortmund striker Haaland as well as former Fortuna Dusseldorf forward Jan Mattsson.

The three players are the only ones to have scored a brace in three of their first five appearances in the Bundesliga, with Haaland’s sensational start to life at Borussia Dortmund in 2020 and Mattsson’s exploits at Dusseldorf in 1976 the only runs to match Boniface.

The Super Eagles striker has already matched another Haaland feat earlier in the season when he was named both the Bundesliga Player of the Month and Rookie of the Season at the same time at the end of August.

Given Haaland’s eventual trajectory, which has led him to become one of the most revered players on the planet and a Ballon d’Or nominee, it is only fitting that Boniface continues to imitate the Manchester City forward’s achievements to become a highly fancied player himself.
