Nigerian striker Victor Boniface has matched an Erling Haaland Bundesliga record.

Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface has equalled Erling Haaland’s Bundesliga record of winning Player of the Month and Rookie of the Month simultaneously.

Boniface’s brilliant form

The 22-year-old only recently joined Bayer Leverkusen from Belgian Pro League side Union Saint-Gilloise and has already established himself as one of the key players in the competition.

His form has also earned him his first Super Eagles appearance, with the Akure-born striker coming on to register an assist in Nigeria’s 6-0 demolition of Sao Tome and Principe.

Boniface has taken to life in the Bundesliga with ease, scoring three goals in as many games. His performance has helped Xabi Alonso’s side maintain a 100 per cent record that has kept Die Werkself as league leader.

Boniface equals Haaland’s record

The league has now recognised the young Nigerian’s exploits, as they awarded him the Player of The Month and Rookie of the Month awards.

Receiving both prizes in the same month puts the striker in an exclusive club of two, as before Boniface, only Erling Haaland had won the awards concomitantly.

The Norwegian won his in January 2020 after a blistering start to his Bundesliga career, scoring five goals in only two games that month.

Haaland, currently at Manchester City, is in what many regard as a direct shoot-out with Lionel Messi for the Ballon d'Or, and his start to life in his first club in a European top-five league, which Boniface has now emulated, could be a signal of what is to come for the Nigerian.
