South African club Cape Town City, which honed the coaching skills of Harambee Stars boss Benni McCarthy, is hatching a clever plan to stay in the top flight despite getting relegated.

South African side Cape Town City may have been relegated but might still play in the top flight next season after all.

Cape Town City were the shocking club that went down last week after losing the relegation-promotion play-off to second-tier side Orbit College despite starting the season with title ambitions.

It was a surprise end to the season for one of South Africa’s top clubs as they had never finished outside the top eight since being founded in 2016, when they bought the top flight status of now defunct Mpumalanga Black Aces.

The club are also one of the well-funded sides and displayed great ambition by signing a host of big-name players who did not produce the good as they struggled throughout the season, going through three coaches, but still finished 15th in the 16-team league, forcing them into the playoffs that has now claimed their place.

However, to protect their interest with an array of well-paying sponsors on their side, Cape Town City are mulling over buying the top flight status of another club to stay in the top flight in what will be a continuation of what has become common in South Africa down the years.

“I’ve got 15 youth internationals in my academy. They don’t want to be playing for an NFD [second tier] club in their future; they want to be at a PSL club, and quite rightly so. We’ve created a lot of value in these players – for themselves and the club,” Cape Town City chairman John Comitis said on a radio show with South African broadcaster Robert Marawa, when asked if he would consider buying the top flight status of another club.

Cape Town City not Ruling Out Buying Another PSL Club

“We do run a business at the end of the day. We don’t ever deny that, but it’s a mutually beneficial business – everybody concerned is a winner when we have a successful player that comes through the ranks and makes it professionally. And we’ve been servicing this industry for 30 years.

“It’s a lot easier to do it at PSL level. There’s a certain funding that you have, there’s an exposure level, which is what you need. It creates value for your players and the club. All these things don’t exist in the NFD. So, for me, it’s critical that we get back into the PSL, and the shortest route is obviously the best route.”

Comitis’ comments come in the wake of reports that SuperSport United are close to selling the club having survived relegation in the final week of last season.

SuperSport, one of South Africa’s oldest and successful clubs, have been struggling financially in recent years and have opted to fold. The club is in the process of finding suitable suitors who will buy it and either retain its brand or give it a new name as it has been witnessed across the country.

It remains to be seen which club will cede its top flight status to Cape Town City who are determined to stay in the Premier Soccer League.

Cape Town City is the club that gave Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy his first job as head coach in 2017 before he left in 2019, having won the 2017-18 MTN8, their last trophy.
