Benni McCarthy’s Proud Records Remain Intact in South Africa as Former Clubs Endure Contrasting Fortunes

Benni McCarthy continues to prove his doubters wrong when it comes to coaching as none of his former clubs in South Africa have matched his achievements since he left.

Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy might be focused on his work in Kenya but he must have an eye on what is happening back home in South Africa.

This is because he had two coaching stints in the South African top flight which yielded success for the clubs but since he was sacked, neither of them has come close to what he achieved.

McCarthy’s first job as head coach was in charge of Cape Town City in his hometown, taking over in July 2017, and he led the club to fifth place in the South African top flight in the 2017-18 season.

In that year, he also won the MTN8, the club’s second trophy following their Telkom Knockout win in 2016, and since then, the Citizens have not won another trophy.

While they have gone on to record another fifth place, fourth place twice and runners-up once, this season has been the worst-ever for Cape Town City as they have gone through three coaches but still ended up in 15th place which means they will need to win a two-legged relegation-promotion playoff to retain their top flight status.

McCarthy was sacked in November 2019, nearly halfway through his second season, but up to date, he remains the coach who won the club’s last trophy.

The South African legend would join AmaZulu in December 2020 when the 2020-21 season was halfway and while the club targeted a top five finish, he exceeded expectations.

AmaZulu finished second in the South African top flight, an achievement that had never been witnessed before and until now, they are yet to reach such heights.

Usuthu, as the Durban-based club are popularly known, would qualify for the 2021-22 CAF Champions League for the first time in their history and against all odds, McCarthy took them past the preliminary round and into the group stages.

Can Harambee Stars Benefit from Benni’s Magic?

McCarthy would be sacked in March 2022 but since he left, AmaZulu have finished seventh, 11th, 12th and sixth this season, their best league placing since the Harambee Stars coach’s exit.

It is a show of tactically astute McCarthy was given he was able to extract the maximum from squads that did not possess much quality compared to giants like Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs who he managed to finish ahead of.

It is perhaps why the Bafana Bafana legend has been complaining over being overlooked for the big jobs in South Africa but luckily for him, he landed a major role as Manchester United first-team coach for two years before joining Harambee Stars in March 2025.

With the tendency of his team to punch above their weight, Kenyans will be hoping that the McCarthy magic rubs off on Harambee Stars who have been perennial underachievers.
