Chelsea shows renewed interest in South African teen Emile Witbooi after impressive trial, with more developments expected post-World Cup.

South African teenage football sensation Emile Witbooi has continued to make waves on the international stage with English Premier League powerhouse Chelsea renewing their interest in the prodigious midfielder.

The 16-year-old, who has already featured in senior games for Cape Town City and helped Amajimbos qualify for the FIFA Under-17 World Cup, is now firmly on the radar of one of Europe’s elite academies.

Following a successful initial stint at Chelsea's London base earlier this year, the talented teen has once again been invited to train with the club for a second assessment.

"Chelsea have made enquiries if he can go back for further training and assessment. It's believed that they are looking at integrating him into their Under-18 team so that he can move through the ranks as he grows.

It's believed that they were impressed when he was last there and they have been keeping tabs on his progress and that's why they still need him," a source close to the player and Cape Town City told Soccer Laduma.

The buzz surrounding the teenager’s potential move has intensified in recent weeks, with scouts from across Europe reportedly monitoring his progress.

However, any transfer decision appears likely to be postponed until after the upcoming FIFA Under-17 World Cup, scheduled to be held in Qatar from 3 to 27 November 2025.

Interest Abroad Grows, But Timing is Key

Witbooi’s performances have not only earned him accolades locally but have drawn attention from various clubs in Europe.

While Chelsea is currently at the forefront of the pursuit, it is understood that other European outfits are also keeping a close eye on the youngster’s development and potential showing at the World Cup.

"I don't think even if Cape Town City want him to go it could be now or soon as they are still monitoring other interest from Europe as well. They are believed to want to see what will happen at the Under-17 FIFA World Cup in Qatar later this year. Though at the moment Chelsea are in the forefront," another insider told Soccer Laduma.

With the tournament fast approaching, Witbooi is set to be one of South Africa’s standout prospects on the global stage.

His performance in helping Amajimbos qualify for the tournament has only added to his growing reputation, with many tipping him as one of the country’s most promising football exports in recent years.

Cautious Optimism from Cape Town City

Cape Town City, who have played a vital role in nurturing Witbooi’s development, are understandably cautious about the next steps in his career.

The club’s owner, John Comitis, confirmed the interest but emphasized that no agreement has yet been finalized.

"The interest is there but there is no final deal on the table yet," Comitis said when contacted by Soccer Laduma.
