Alpha Onyango has revealed the inspiration behind his strong run of goalscoring form after helping Gor Mahia reach the FKF Cup final following their win over Murang'a Seal.

Gor Mahia midfielder Alpha Onyango has expressed his delight over finding the back of the net yet again during their FKF Cup semi final win over Murang’a Seal on Sunday afternoon.

Onyango netted Gor Mahia’s first equalising goal as K’Ogalo sailed to a 2-2 draw with the Seals by full time, requiring the game to go direct to penalties, where they triumphed 5-4 in the end.

Onyango, who plays predominantly as a deep lying playmaker who aids Gor Mahia’s build up by dropping deep to receive the ball, has been finding the back of the net on a more regular basis and in a more advanced position.

Speaking following the match, Onyango explained in a live broadcast interview the thinking behind his well executed goal, which saw him receive the ball on the edge of the box, turn and then unleash a ferocious shot into the back of the net.

“When I received the ball, I discovered I would attempt the shot at goal upon taking the turn since I had space.

“It shows that I am growing. Every chance I get to find the back of the net, I have to make an attempt. I am grateful to have found the back of the net, and hope my run will continue in the final.

Onyango said he would distribute the amount among the three academies where he developed as a young player.

“There are three academies being created near where I grew up (Makongeni). I will try to give those teams over there something for them to get.”

“We are prepared and ready to face anybody. It’s a final, and therefore it will be a tough match regardless of the opponent,” said Onyango.

In the final, Gor Mahia will face the winner of the semi-final between Nairobi United and Mara Sugar.

Before that, the Mashemeji Derby awaits on Monday, 2 June 2025, at the Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay (ROSH).

The win was anything but straightforward. Murang’a Seal stunned Gor with an early fifth-minute goal from Michael Owen and held onto the lead into the break.

Gor came out rejuvenated in the second half, responding through Bryson Wangai and Onyango’s spectacular effort. But the Seals clawed back with a Wilson Kamau equaliser to send the match into penalties.

Gor Mahia were perfect from the spot, with Onyango leading the charge. Goalkeeper Gad Mathews became the hero, saving Harun Mwale’s penalty to send the Kenyan giants into yet another final.

Looking ahead, Onyango insists the team is ready for whatever challenge awaits. “We are prepared and ready to face anybody. It’s a final, and therefore it will be a tough match regardless of the opponent,” he stated.

Gor Mahia will now face the winner of the other semi-final between Nairobi United and Mara Sugar. But before that, all eyes will turn to the Mashemeji Derby showdown against AFC Leopards set for Monday, June 2, 2025, at the Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay.
