There was a feeling of betrayal among Uganda Cranes fans last Thursday when Tanzania battled for a goalless draw against Algeria to qualify for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Tanzania went into that final-day qualifier with seven points, three more than Uganda’s count and needed just a draw to go through.

Indeed, the Taifa Stars went on to hold on to the goalless draw against an Algerian side that missed several key faces, including captain Riyadh Mahrez, who was introduced late in the game.

Algeria’s head coach, Djamel Belmadi, has admitted that he used the match to test a number of upcoming players.

“Against Tanzania,” Belmadi told media on Sunday evening in Algiers, “I put a team almost of U23s. It is a team of players who are discovering the selection.”

He explains: “When you play with a lot of young people who aren't used to working together, it's not the same, it's a choice. Some people deliberately do not understand that these are tests.”

The Algerians have flown to Dakar, Senegal, ahead of their high-profile international friendly against African champions Senegal.

The Senegalese played their final Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Rwanda in Kigali despite being the designated hosts.

The Lions of Teranga also used a weaker squad in the match they drew 1-all.
