Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga has left Al Duhail as their all-time top scorer and is now being urged to make a legacy-cementing move.

Harambee Stars striker and captain Michael Olunga has been urged to make a legacy-cementing move after his Al Duhail exit.

On Thursday, Olunga confirmed his departure from the Qatari side drawing a curtain on a sparkling four-and-a-half-year stay.

Olunga quickly became the Doha side’s reference point in attack after joining from Japan’s Kashiwa Reysol in January 2021.

His prolific form cemented his status as a cult hero among Al Duhail’s fans breaking the club’s scoring record while lifting three domestic trophies and twice finishing league top-scorer.

Olungas's Legacy by the Numbers

Olunga’s numbers speak for themselves. 130 goals in all competitions, a single-season haul of 30 league strikes in 2022-23, and a brace of Golden Boots in Qatar have cemented his reputation as top tier striker.

One of his most memorable was his hat-trick in the 2023 Emir Cup final, a performance that sealed the domestic treble and etched his name into Al Duhail folklore.

The former Gor Mahia forward's legacy is commendable but former Harambee Stars striker Elijah Onsika believes one thing still lacks in his resume.

Onsika Urges European Comeback

With his contract now expired, the 31-year-old finds himself at a crossroads with former Kenyan international Onsika believing the next step is clear return to Europe.

Olunga’s only previous spell on the continent came in 2017-18, when he spent a season on loan at Girona and netted a stunning 22-minute hat-trick against Las Palmas, the first ever by a Kenyan in La Liga.

“Olunga should now look beyond Asia and the Middle East and put focus on playing his remaining career in Europe,” Onsika said as quoted by Flashscore, name-checking Arsenal, Newcastle United and Everton as ideal fits.

“I don’t see any reason why teams in Europe should shy away from signing Olunga, given his finishing talent, look at what he has achieved in Qatar," he added.

"I pray and hope that he will end up in Europe in his next move.”

For now, the Harambee Stars captain is weighing offers, but with a proven scoring pedigree and a clean bill of health, a move to one of Europe’s top five leagues would be a fitting next chapter in a career defined by goals that shows no sign of slowing down.
