Kenya men's basketball side failed to make it back-to-back wins at the continental tournament following their rivals' great second-half comeback.

Kenya Morans failed to make it two wins from as many matches when they suffered a 66-63 loss to Gabon at the FIBA AfroCan in Luanda, Angola on Monday.

Morans needed victory to top Group A with a maximum of six points and sail through to the quarter-final where they would get a favourable draw but found the going tough against the debutants.

Gabon had on Sunday lost 66-52 to the Ivory Coast, who Kenya beat 62-52 in their opening match on Saturday, but proved a handful for coach Cliff Owuor’s charges in Monday’s encounter.

Kenya took a narrow 16-15 lead in the first quarter before winning the second 16-12 for a 32-27 lead at halftime but Gabon turned the tables in the third quarter, winning it by a massive 27-18, as Morans slackened on the court.

Gabon used a combination of good defence and precision in their shooting to down Owuor’s men, restricting them from taking three-point shots at will as they had done against Ivory Coast.

Their blocks also made Kenya find it difficult to score while they benefited from the East Africans’ struggles from the free throw line.

Kenya woke up from their slumber in the fourth quarter which they won 13-12 but the damage had already been done and could not overturn the deficit at the final buzzer.

Derrick Ogechi was still Kenya’s best performer with 16 points, three less than he managed on Saturday, as the Gabonese closely watched him while he had eight rebounds, one assist, and a steal.

While his attempts from distance increased from eight to nine, he could only fire in two three-pointers compared to three against Ivory Coast.

Kenya’s Bramel Mwobe was the player with the most rebounds after managing 11 while Eric Mutoro contributed four assists in the encounter.

Despite the defeat, Kenya still top Group A by virtue of more points (125 scored and 118 conceded) while Ivory Coast edged Gabon to second place, having scored 118 while conceding 114, to their rivals’’ 118 against 129.
