The Kenyan sports fraternity has been left in shock following the sudden death of Kenya Basketball Federation boss Paul Otula in Nairobi on Thursday.

The Kenyan sports fraternity is in mourning following the death of Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) chairman Paul Otula on Thursday.

Otula, who also previously served as principal of Maseno School, died following a cardiac arrest at his Nairobi home as per his family.

His demise sent shockwaves within the Kenyan sports fraternity as he looked to be in great health and was among candidates vying for various seats at the upcoming National Olympics Committee of Kenya elections, having expressed an interest in the assistant treasurer’s post.

Otula has been a long-serving president of KBF, having first been elected chairman in 2008, before he retained his seat in subsequent elections, including the 2021 polls, when he beat marketer and former basketballer Cynthia Mumbo by 57-45 votes.

His reign at the helm of KBF was marked with mixed fortunes with both Kenya Morans and Lionesses experiencing improved fortunes in recent years.

He was, however, also criticised in some quarters for not doing much to lift the standards of basketball in the country but he remained steadfast in his love for the game.

Otula is also a basketball coach who won numerous national school titles with his teams, including Maseno, who were so dominant during his time in charge.
