Nairobi City Thunder made BAL history for Kenya, overcoming poor infrastructure and setbacks to inspire hope in African basketball.
A fortnight ago, Nairobi City Thunder made history by defeating South Africa’s Made By Ball (MBB) 85-76 in the Basketball Africa League (BAL) by registering Kenya’s first-ever win in the continental competition.
The win not only etched NCT into the annals of African basketball but also shattered MBB’s hopes of early playoff qualification.
But behind that historic win is a deeper story; one of grit, setbacks and quiet determination.

At the U.S.–Kenya Creative Economy Forum 2025 held on Thursday at a Nairobi Hotel that was attended by Pulse Sports, Sandra Kimokoti, co-founder of Twende Sports and Chief Business Officer of Nairobi City Thunder, shed light on the difficult realities the team faces—particularly with infrastructure at Nairobi’s Nyayo Stadium.
"Big part of that distribution was seeing what the NBA players were doing with basketball at the league and wanting to be able to tap into that. On the second side of the gate was wanting to build a pipeline of kind of basketball talent and showing the world what kind of talent they're doing with basketball,” Kimokoti said, during Breakout Session 3: Sports Beyond the Game: Investing in Kenya’s Sports Economy.
She explained that while the club has made huge strides off the court—growing its social media following from under 2,000 to over 150,000—its players still struggle to perform under less-than-ideal conditions.
The facilities at Nyayo Stadium, the current training and playing ground for the Thunder, have increasingly become a major barrier to progress.
"You'll stay there. Then you show up and you'll stay there. And then you realize there's a bookie. You'll be booked. So then you wait for like two hours, then it pains. And then it's sparky on the roof, then you have to shut down everything until it calms down," she added.

5 Times Harambee Stars Captain Michael Olunga Shocked the Football World

Kimokoti painted a picture of a team forced to operate within a broken system, where facility access is unreliable and the infrastructure is outdated or poorly maintained.

From unexpected cancellations to poor playing conditions, NCT's efforts on the court are constantly threatened by challenges off it.
"If we won't have two, three other teams get some time to talk to, maybe get concessions of that in Nyayo, to an arena, okay? All of a sudden, all of us have training time outside of Nyayo Stadium. By the way, the court in Nairobi is really bad," she admitted.
Despite these roadblocks, the team remains hopeful and committed to elevating the game of basketball in Kenya.

Benni McCarthy Suffers Setback as Key Harambee Stars Forward Withdraws from Chad Friendly Due to Injury
Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy’s plans for the upcoming friendly matches against Chan have been hampered somewhat after one of his main players suffered an injury.
Kimokoti emphasized the need for collaborative solutions, urging stakeholders across sports, business, and government to work together in building better infrastructure for all.
"It's a great that partner is doing well, but it's really a ecosystem, okay? It's a play of rising tide with all goals," she said.
“So that’s the next step for us, like how to start with folks who want to come together and do how to be a chapter.”
