The 17 year-old's education was cut short leaving him desperate and on the verge.

Youngster Amos Kipkemoi has revealed he found solace in athletics after a series of family issues that even saw him drop out of school.

The 17-year-old narrated how family wrangles including land disputes took a massive toll on him as he could not raise school fees to enable him to continue with his studies. That was when he decided to venture into running.

"I dropped out of school because of the many family issues we had including land disputes. I decided to focus on athletics and maybe in the future when I get some money, I will go back to school," he said.

He is passionate about his career and despite the many challenges he has been through, he cannot afford to give up.

"I have been through a lot of challenges. Sometimes we sleep hungry especially those of us from humble backgrounds. My coach encourages me to keep going and I know my future is bright," he said.

The Kericho-based athlete is keen on following in the footsteps of the late Nicholas Bett, who had achieved so many titles to his name over the 400m Hurdles distance before his life was cut short abruptly through a grisly road accident.

He was the 2015 world 400mH champion, the 2014 Africa bronze medallist, and finished among the top eight at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

During the Athletics Kenya trials for the Africa Junior Championships, Kipkemoi won the 400mH race in 53.40 ahead of Jacob Kimurongo who clocked 55.25. Dennis Kipchumba placed third in 56.42.

He promised that when he goes to Lusaka, he will be keen to represent the country well and hopefully finish in the podium bracket.

"I am looking forward to repeating the performance here or even doing much better," he said.
