She clocked 9:08:34 to win the women's 3000m race.

After cruising smoothly to victory over the 3000m women's race, Nancy Cherop of Elgeyo Marakwet is happy to have healed her heartbreak after missing out on a ticket to the World Cross-country championships in February.

Her dominant win during the Athletics Kenya trials for the Africa Under 18 and 20 Championships in Lusaka, Zambia secures her a direct ticket to the continental show.

Cherop obliterated a strong field at the Athletics Kenya trials for the continental event to place first in 9:08.34 ahead of Joyline Chepkemoi of Lemotit who clocked 9:16.03. Faith Chepchumba of Trans Nzoia placed third in 9:23.31.

"I am happy with this win even though my race was not easy. I have defeated Chepkemoi who beat me last year during the trials for the Cross-country," she said.

The trials for the World Cross-country championships were held last year at the Prisons Staff Training College in Ruiru.

Speaking on what she wants to achieve in Lusaka, Cherop said she wants to stun the Ethiopians who have always been a nightmare to the Kenyan athletes over the distance.

"I want to go and win in Zambia. That's my main target. I want to work with Chepkemoi to make sure we raise the flag. This time round, the Ethiopians will be shocked," she said.

Cherop revealed that she has to work on her speed when goes back to training in Iten and added that her endurance is top-notch.
