A key delay in installing the tartan track at Nyayo Stadium has been resolved, paving the way for completion by early July.

Athletics Kenya Nairobi chair, Barnaba Korir, has given a positive update on when the tartan track is likely to be installed at the Nyayo National Stadium.

Athletics Kenya is set to host the trials for the World Championships in Tokyo, Japan, between August 1 and 2, and questions have been raised concerning the venue of the event, but there is hope at the end of the tunnel following Korir’s revelation.

The sixth edition of the Kip Keino Classic was scheduled for the Nyayo National Stadium, but construction was still going on, hence the decision to upgrade the Ulinzi Sports Complex to meet World Athletics standards.

The Kip Keino Classic meet director pointed out that Athletics Kenya recently had a meeting to follow up on the progress, and so far, things are looking up.

Barnaba Korir revealed that they were waiting for a specific type of glue, which has since been found, and once it arrives in the country, the contractors will begin the process immediately.

Korir gave assurance that the track will be ready before the African Nations Championship, which is set to be hosted across Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania between August 2 and 30.

“We got assurance that the glue, which was missing at that time, is already there, and there is assurance that by the end of this month, we’ll be having the glue and they will start immediately after that,” Barnaba Korir revealed in an interview with KBC Sport.

“We have discussed with the senior people in government that as soon as that arrives, before CHAN, then they can place the tartan, in late June or early July. The ground has already been prepared, and there is no problem.”

He added that the government has been very instrumental in speeding up the process of getting the stadium ready and revealed that now, all eyes will be on the contractor to get the job done.

“The only thing remaining is the glue, and the government has done a fantastic job by providing the resources that are required to lay that down. We are just waiting for the contractor to complete the process,” Barnaba Korir added.

With everything finally falling into place, the countdown begins as Kenya edges closer to seeing top-tier athletics return to Nyayo Stadium’s new-look track.
