Sharon Lokedi’s mother has shared the tough journey her daughter has been on before she went on to floor Hellen Obiri to win the 2025 Boston Marathon.

Sharon Lokedi’s mother is thankful that her prayers were answered when she watched her daughter triumph at the Boston Marathon on Monday.

Lokedi outwitted defending champion Hellen Obiri to claim the win in a new course record time of 2:17:22, which earned her a cool $200,000 (Ksh26 million) for the two-hour job.

The race was witnessed by her pensive mother Rose Lokedi, who held her breath for most of the contest, as she wished her daughter victory.

“I feel happy, initially I was in panic mode because it is not easy. Everybody came to win and when they get there, as a parent, all you can do is to pray for your child to win,” Rose told Puravida Sports Africa.

“I was praying for her. For three days, I was holding the Bible praying for her. I could not sleep [the night before the race] but I was telling God to give her whatever he had planned for her.

“She is someone who is determined and she gives her best when she goes out to compete. I pray for her a lot knowing when she goes out there, she will give her best. I am thankful that God has opened doors for her and done everything.”

Rose has watched on as her daughter has shaped into a world marathon beater with the marathoner having displayed her athletics prowess early.

“Sharon started running when she was young. Where we live, the school was very far so she would run from home to school for lunch like 4km both ways,” she added of Sharon Lokedi, who hails from Olaare Village in Burnt Forest, Uasin Gishu County.

“That is how she got into school competitions and I would accompany her. She competed up to the national level. She was young so I could not leave her alone.

“She would win presents like shoes and blankets from winning primary school competitions until she went to high school. We decided to enroll her at Kapkenda Girls because they had an emphasis on athletics and that is how her talent was nurtured.

“When she finished high school, she went to camp in Kaptagat to look for an athletics scholarship. She came and studied at Kansas University for four years and took up running seriously upon completion.”

Boston was the second major marathon Lokedi was winning after her victory in New York in 2022 but she has had to endure some disappointments, failing to retain her New York title in 2023, when she was third, before being beaten by Obiri in Boston last year.
