Both Geoffrey Kamworor and Jackline Cherono emerged victorious in the 2025 Rotterdam Marathon.

Geoffrey Kamworor and Jackline Cherono made headlines in Rotterdam this Sunday, April 13, after claiming top honors at the 2025 NN Rotterdam Marathon.

In the men’s category, the race, which is known for its fast, flat course and generous elite prize purse, saw Kamworor, a seasoned Kenyan long-distance star, outpaced a formidable Ethiopian contingent to win the men’s title in 2:04:33, just 10 seconds shy of his personal best.

Despite missing out on the course record set by Bashir Abdi in 2021 (2:03:36), Kamworor delivered a commanding performance in the final stretch to bag the $10,000 (Ksh 1.295 million)  top prize.

In the women’s race, Jackline Cherono emerged victorious in 2:21:15, comfortably smashing her previous personal best.

For a while, she looked poised to break the long-standing course record of 2:18:58 held by Tiki Gelana, but she fell short in the closing kilometers.

Nonetheless, her efforts earned her the women’s winner’s cheque of $10,000 (Ksh 1.295 million)  as well.

The runner-up and third-place finishers in both races also walked away with impressive payouts—$4,000 ( Ksh 518,000) and $3,000  (Ksh 389,000) respectively.

Ethiopia’s Chala Regasa (2:05:07) and Chimdessa Debele (2:05:26) followed Kamworor on the men’s podium, while Aminet Ahmed (2:22:14) and Azmera Gebru (2:22:16), both also from Ethiopia, took second and third in the women’s category.

Though neither Kamworor nor Cherono were eligible for the $3,000 bonus awarded for sub-60 or sub-70 minute performances in the half-marathon split, their winnings from the main event still place them among the top earners of the weekend.

With their victories in Rotterdam, Kamworor and Cherono not only bolstered their reputations as elite marathoners but also took a substantial step toward financial reward—earning each a five-figure payday in the process.
