Barnaba Korir has suggested that Nyayo Stadium may be ready soon to host track events, offering hope ahead of the national trials.

Stadium dilemmas have been the order of the day in Kenya, and athletes have struggled to access conducive training grounds.

The unavailability of the Nyayo National Stadium and the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani has further forced Athletics Kenya to host the Kip Keino Classic at the Ulinzi Sports Complex for the first time since the inaugural edition of the event six years ago.

Construction of the tartan track has already begun at the Nyayo National Stadium, and athletes will soon start enjoying the benefits of the world-class facility.

However, for now, most track and field events will be held at the Ulinzi Sports Complex, which is also undergoing the certification process.

Concerning the stadium's readiness, Barnaba Korir explained that Athletics Kenya officials have their fingers crossed to have the Nyayo National Stadium ready by August.

Athletics Kenya will be conducting the national trials for the World Championships in Tokyo, Japan, in September, and Barnaba Korir is hopeful that all will be ready by then and they will have the chance to host the event on a new track. The trials are scheduled tentatively for July 24 and 25.

Speaking during the Kip Keino Classic launch at the Ulinzi Sports Complex on Tuesday, Barnaba Korir added that having a new track would give them an upper hand in the bid to host major events like the Diamond League and World Championships.

“If we continue like this, we shall be able to get the Diamond League and eventually the World Championship, and I can see the way the stadium is being built, we are very happy,” Barnaba Korir revealed.

“We expect that by next year, we shall also be competing with the world as far as the stadiums are concerned. It’s coming up very well, and we know that Nyayo is coming up very well, and the tartan is being placed.

“We hope that by the time we reach the trials for the World Championships in August, I believe that we shall be having our track there so that our athletes can compete there, and we are happy with the progress.”

While athletes have faced significant setbacks due to stadium unavailability, the ongoing upgrades at Nyayo National Stadium offer renewed hope.

Barnaba Korir has high expectations that the new world-class track will be ready in time to host the national trials and hopefully even give Kenya a chance to host global track and field events.
