Athletics Kenya has revealed that the 2026 Kip Keino Classic is likely to be held at a different venue from the Ulinzi Complex which staged the 2025 edition.

Athletics Kenya has hinted at a venue change for this year’s edition of the Kip Keino Classic.

Since becoming a World Athletics Continental Tour Gold event in 2020, Kip Keinco Classic has been attracting top names with American sprinters Sha’Carri Richardson, Fred Kerley, Kenny Bednarek and Botswana’s Olympics 200m champion Letsile Tebogo among those who have graced the meet.

Jamaican legend Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce also signed up in 2023 although an injury locked her out when she had already landed in Nairobi.

Local heroes like Ferdinand Omanyala, Emmanuel Wanyonyi, Mary Moraa, Abraham Kibiwott, Julius Yego, and Faith Cherotic have also lit up the event and 2026 will not be different.

Meet Director Reveals Preferred Kip Keino Venue

This year’s edition will be held on April 24 but the venue is yet to be chosen. However, according to Athletics Kenya Nairobi region chairman Bernaba Korir, Nyayo Stadium will likely host this year’s edition.

“Today at the Nyayo National Stadium, I met with Sports Stadia Director General Mr Timothy Kilimo, Julius, Diana, and Jimmy as we work to confirming the venue for the Kip Keino Classic on April 24,” Korir posted on social media on Thursday.

“The chances are very high that we’ll host it here. We are now working full throttle as a federation with the government and partners to fill the stadium and make this a world-class event.

“Success here opens the door to a Diamond League meet, and eventually the World Championships,” added Korir, who is the Kip Keino Classic meet director.

Nyayo Not New to Continental Tour Gold Event

Taking it to Nyayo will be moving back to familiar grounds after the 2025 edition was staged at the Ulinzi Complex, owing to renovation works at the former and Kasarani Stadium.

Nyayo Stadium hosted the inaugural edition in 2020 before it moved to Kasarani for the 2021, 2022 and 2023 events. The meet returned to Nyayo in 2024.

There have been concerns that Nyayo might not be available as it is set to be closed for renovations designed to get it ready for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations but it looks like the stadium will host the Kip Keino Classic for the third time in the event’s history.
