Noah Lyles revealed he was not surprised by Kishane Thompson's 2024 breakout season, having studied him closely and known his potential long before the world took notice.

Noah Lyles has opened up his rivalry with Kishane Thompson and explained why he was not surprised by the Jamaican’s impressive runs in the 2024 season.

For track and field fans, Kishane Thompson might have been a discovery in 2024, but for Noah Lyles, he knew of the Olympic silver medallist’s existence way before the world knew it.

Kishane Thompson had one of his most successful seasons in 2024, but Noah Lyles knew it was bound to happen, thanks partly to his fiancée Junelle Bromfield and his own curiosity.

Kishane Thompson started his 2024 season with a DNF at the JAAA Olympic French Foray, but that was not cause for alarm because he went ahead to set a world-leading time in the men’s 100m at the Jamaican Olympic trials, clocking 9.77 seconds for the win.

He then won the 100m at the Gyulai István Memorial, a Hungarian Athletics Grand Prix, just before the Paris Olympic Games, where he put a lot of pressure on Noah Lyles before the American narrowly won the 100m title.

They both clocked 9.79 seconds to cross the finish line, but Noah Lyles’ was five thousandths of a second faster. After that, Kishane Thompson did not compete further due to an injury.

Kishane Thompson was never in the limelight and always competed sparingly due to his injury struggles.

This forced him to miss out on a lot of major competitions, but the Paris Olympic Games came at the right time, and he was able to compete in the French capital.

Noah Lyles revealed that he knew Kishane Thompson and was following his tracks way before he got reintroduced to the world.

Lyles added that he had the time to study him and knew the best way to defeat him during competitions, noting that he was also aware of his history with injuries.

“Kishane running fast did not surprise me, I had heard that he is an extremely good talent and that he has the potential. He had just, you know, struggled a little bit with staying healthy,” Noah Lyles said in an interview on the Run Blog Run.

“Now seeing that he was healthy and seeing him run those times, yes, 9.77 seconds is fast, and I was like okay, yeah, that is faster than I thought you had the potential for versus what I was thinking.

“Before I had seen it, but at the same time, I was still studying him, and you know, had my own thoughts of okay if I need to beat this guy, I know how I'm going to beat him.”

Noah Lyles and Kishane Thompson will continue their rivalry this season, both looking very confident and ready to attack when it matters most, at the World Championships in Tokyo, Japan.

Kishane Thompson hopes to get his revenge after painfully losing to the triple world champion at the Stade de France, setting up a stage for an exciting showdown in September.
