American sprint legend Michael Johnson has expressed his excitement in watching the African Games and the lessons learnt from the event.

American sprint icon Michael Johnson is impressed by how the men’s 4x100m relay race punned out at the African Games in Accra, Ghana.

The American legend commented on a video shared by Fitz Dunk on X (Twitter), noting that the race still turned out well even without a world record, national record, or African record broken.

He explained that such things are what make the sport beautiful and bring out fans in large numbers to support their favourite athletes. The race was won by Nigeria with Ghana finishing second in what was a tight race that was only separated by 0.02 seconds at the line.

“Great race, great competition, excited crowd, excited announcer. How is this possible with no mention of WR, NR, AR, etc? Because racing is exciting and people love it,” Johnson said.

Other track and field fans could not wait to make remarks on his comments, having been ardent followers of the ongoing games.

One of the X (Twitter) users said: “That was so great to watch!!! It should ALWAYS be about the racing!!!”

Bongani Mabhena added another comment saying: “That's what makes the games fun. Nobody really expects spectacular times. It's all about winning & rivalry.

“In this case, Nigeria got revenge over Ghana who took the relay in their own background when the games were hosted in Nigeria many years back.”

Walt Murphy also added to the comments saying: “That’s why the Penn Relays are great. The crowd will get just as excited for a competitive high school boys 4x400 race that goes in 3:35 as it would for a 2:59 college race.”

Clive Walters added another comment saying: “Love the competitiveness of this race and the crowd reaction from the stands is electrifying.”
