The world of athletics has been thrown into mourning following the loss of Letsile Tebogo's mother.

The world of athletics has been thrown into a state of shock following the demise of Letsile Tebogo’s mother, Seratiwa Tebogo.

According to Track Gazette, Seratiwa lost her life after a short illness and she will be survived by Tebogo and her 12-year-old sister. Tebogo’s mother has been a pillar in the youngster’s career and supported him all through and her demise will definitely leave a huge gap in his life.

Seratiwa made headlines at last year’s World Championships in Budapest, Hungary where Tebogo made history to become the first African to win a medal in the men’s 100m. The 20-year-old also bagged a bronze medal in the 200m.

During an interview at the time, Tebogo’s mother was clearly excited and she could not hide her joy from her vibrant smile.

“To say I’m excited is an understatement…Africa is so proud…I’m so proud that he put Africa in the map. It’s Africa before Botswana and so we are thrilled,” an excited Seratiwa said.

She also went on to explain how she realised Tebogo had a special talent in the sprints and how she managed to nurture him to become the star that he is.

Meanwhile, Tebogo has been off to a great start to his season and one could hardly tell that things at home were not okay. He started off with a 300m world record and then proceeded to set a 400m personal best time in South Africa.

He also finished second at the Kip Keino Classic in the 200m, with his recent race being the 100m at the USTAF Los Angeles Grand Prix where he finished second behind Kyree King.

The loss of his mother is undoubtedly a significant personal blow for the young athlete, who has often credited his family for their unwavering support throughout his career.
