Akani Simbine is not disappointed after losing the men's 100m title to Kishane Thompson in Budapest, as he insisted it is part of his steady build-up to peak in Tokyo.

Akani Simbine has broken his silence following his performance at the Gyulai István Memorial, a Hungarian Athletics Grand Prix on Tuesday night, August 12.

The South African sprinter faced his second 100m defeat of the season, competing against a strong field comprising Olympic 100m silver medallist Kishane Thompson and Africa’s fastest man, Ferdinand Omanyala.

Kishane Thompson claimed the win in the race, dipping under 10 seconds as he clocked an impressive 9.95 seconds.

Speaking after the race, the world indoor bronze medallist revealed that his main focus is on making a mark at the World Championships in Tokyo, Japan, in September.

He noted that his focus is now on competing at the Celje Athletics Meet in Slovenia before heading to the Diamond League Meeting final in Zurich on August 27 and 28.

Akani Simbine had a false start at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary and he added that coming out and finishing third was a blessing and soothed the pain he had after failing to make the final of the men’s 100m.

“I’m building up race by race; the main goal is Tokyo. Now it’s all about sharpening up and staying healthy. Next up is Celje, then the Diamond League Final, and final prep for the championships. It felt good to race again in Budapest after my false starts here last time. I’m happy to be back,” Akani Simbine said after the race.
