Wiseman Were: Why Kenyan Sprinter Is Not Happy Despite Smashing Meet Record at Kip Keino Classic

National champion Wiseman Were may have lowered the 400m hurdles meet record and hit the World Championships qualifying mark but he is still not happy with his performance.

Were clocked a new personal best time of 48.34 seconds to smash the meet record at the Kip Keino Classic at Ulinzi Complex on Saturday, getting inside the 48.50 second mark, that is required to qualify for the World Championships.

The 2022 African Championships bronze medallist finished ahead of Kemorena Tisang of Botswana, who managed a personal best 48.59 seconds, while another Kenyan Kipkorir Rotich also improved his personal best, timing 49.17 seconds for third place.

However, Were was still disappointed by his performance, expressing regret that he did not hit a time which he feels he is very capable of.

"I feel good with the performance. I’m a sub-47:00 athlete, though I did not achieve that I am happy with the victory,” Were said after the race, explaining his big ambitions.

Were is also keen to polish on some things that he feels have a huge bearing on his performance with the upcoming Diamond League meetings a good place for him to do it.

"I will now sharpen on the hurdle clearance as I prepare for the Diamond League," added the sprinter.

It was, however, an improved performance from the sprinter whose best time over the distance had been 48.52 seconds clocked in Nairobi in 2023, before the new time at Ulinzi Complex on Saturday.
