Wiseman Were has called on the Kenyan government to support local sprinting talent now, arguing that with proper investment, Kenya can develop world-class sprinters.

Wiseman Were believes Kenya also has young sprinting talents like South Africa’s Bayanda Walaza, and they only need nurturing to get to the top level.

The 400m hurdles specialist revealed that Kenya does not have to wait for the coming years to support sprinting youngsters, challenging the government to provide support at this time.

Wiseman Were explained that the difference between Kenya, South Africa and Botswana is that the other two nations have taken track and field seriously and are ready to invest any amount of money to ensure that they take the lead in any major events.

However, for Kenya, thousands of young athletes always show up during weekend meets but disappear after struggles of finding funding or training gear, and most of them tend to give up along the way.

Wiseman Were challenged the government to give the young sprinters the benefit of the doubt and back them.

He pointed out that their efforts were seen at the World Athletics Relays, where Kenya’s 4x100m relay team qualified for the World Championships in Tokyo.

Wiseman Were added that if Kenya intends to take a large number of sprinters to the LA 2028 Olympic Games, the preparations should start now, when there is time to identify the rising stars and give them all the support needed.

“It’s not a matter of when it will happen because it’s already happening…All I can say is that the athletes should be given the right support. We need it now, not soon,” Wiseman Were revealed.

“They already did it at the World Relays in China, so they need the support at the moment, and we don’t need that rush hour to start supporting these guys.

“If we are serious about this matter and the funds are there, we are going to see a good number of athletes, not only the sprinters but field events too.”

Wiseman Were is inarguably Kenya’s top 400m hurdler, who has constantly placed Kenya on the world map, and his insights are proof that the rising stars have been neglected.

With enough support, Wiseman Were believes Kenya is able to join the ranks of other top nations in sprinting and even surpass them.

This season, Wiseman Were in four events, opening his season at the 1st National Trials in Uganda and then proceeding to the FNB Botswana Golden Grand Prix.

Wiseman Were also competed at the 115th Drake Relays presented by Xtream powered by Mediacom before heading to the 6th Athletics Kenya weekend meet.

He admitted that in all the events he attended within the walls of the continent, sprinters came out in large numbers, but one question remains: where do all these talents go after shining in local events?
