The Harambee Stars, roared on by a partisan Kasarani crowd, were bidding to reach their first continental semi-final in 38 years.

But after a tense 1-1 draw across 120 minutes, Madagascar prevailed 4-3 on spot-kicks, with Toky Rakotondraibe converting the decisive penalty after Alphonce Omija missed for the hosts.

Kibwage, who is set to join Gor Mahia from Tusker, was among the penalty takers who faltered in the shootout.

His spot-kick was saved by Madagascar goalkeeper Ramandimbisoa “Toldo” Lalain’arijaka Michel, sparking visible frustration as the defender kicked the air in anger.

Despite the disappointment, Kibwage delivered an emotional message to fans, underlining the team’s progress.

“Football can be cruel. Some pains take a while to settle in,” he admitted on his Facebook page on Monday morning.

“We gave it our all, wanted to make the country proud. Sadly we had to exit in a painful way.”

The centre-back, however, emphasised the resilience and unity of the squad, as well as the crucial role fans played in pushing them beyond expectations.

“Very few gave us a chance, but you, our dear fans, believed in us and pushed us every step of the way. We are truly grateful for your support and truly sorry we didn’t keep the party going.”

Looking forward, Kibwage chose optimism, insisting Kenya’s promising campaign was a foundation for future success.

“We can only look up with pride, because this is only the beginning. Asanteni.”

Brighter Future Ahead

The Harambee Stars’ quarter-final run was their deepest at CHAN in nearly four decades and has injected renewed belief in the potential of local-based players.

With Kibwage now heading to domestic giants Gor Mahia, his leadership and experience are expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the next chapter of Kenyan football.
