Sunderland vs Manchester United: Preview, Team News, Possible Lineups, Time and Score Prediction
Manchester United have already secured their return to the Champions League, but interim manager Michael Carrick's future remains uncertain as his team prepares for Saturday's Premier League fixture against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.
The Red Devils are aiming to complete their ninth Premier League double over the Black Cats, having won the reverse fixture 2-0 at Old Trafford seven months ago.
Sunderland vs Manchester United: Match Preview
After a difficult 2025-26 season without European competition, Manchester United confirmed their place in next season's Champions League with a dramatic 3-2 victory over rivals Liverpool last weekend, sealed by a late winner from academy graduate Kobbie Mainoo.
The Red Devils, who finished a disappointing 15th last season under former manager Ruben Amorim, can now lock up third place with two games to spare if they defeat Sunderland and Liverpool fail to beat Chelsea.
United's turnaround under Carrick has been remarkable. Since his appointment in mid-January, no Premier League team has earned more points (32).
The 20-time English champions have also won 10 league games under the 44-year-old, surpassing the eight victories they managed in their first 20 matches of the season.
Several key players have publicly endorsed Carrick for the permanent manager role, and he recently indicated that he expects the club to announce a decision on his future before the end of the month.
In the meantime, United will be focused on securing a fourth consecutive league win and extending their strong record at the Stadium of Light, where they have lost only once in 15 top-flight visits.
Sunderland, however, have seen their European aspirations fade after a three-match winless streak. Following a convincing 1-0 home victory against Tottenham on April 12, their form has dipped significantly.
A heavy 5-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest was followed by a 1-1 draw at last-place Wolves, a match marred by a controversial red card for Daniel Ballard for hair-pulling, a decision the club has since appealed.
Currently 12th in the table and four points adrift of the top seven with just three games left, head coach Regis Le Bris wants his team to "be proud" of a season where they have exceeded expectations and comfortably avoided a relegation battle.
Le Bris acknowledged the "challenging fixture" ahead against a team they have historically struggled with. Sunderland have won just three of their 33 Premier League meetings with Manchester United, and their 24 losses against them are the most they have suffered against any opponent in the division.
The Black Cats have also lost four of their last five home games and are winless in their last 28 league matches against teams starting the day in the top four.
Sunderland vs Manchester United: Team News
Sunderland will be without defender Daniel Ballard, who begins a three-match suspension. Romaine Mundle is also sidelined with a hamstring injury.
However, Nilson Angulo and Bertrand Traore have returned to training after long absences and could feature in the matchday squad.
Luke O’Nien or Lutsharel Geertruida is expected to partner Omar Alderete in central defence. In midfield, captain Granit Xhaka, who has scored three goals from outside the box against United, will likely be joined by Noah Sadiki and Habib Diarra.
For Manchester United, Matthijs de Ligt remains out with a back injury, while striker Benjamin Sesko is a doubt after sustaining a shin problem against Liverpool. Lisandro Martinez is set to return from a three-game suspension and will likely replace Ayden Heaven at centre-back.
Playmaker Bruno Fernandes, who is just one assist shy of the all-time Premier League single-season record of 20, is expected to start in his advanced midfield role.
Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and former Sunderland loanee Amad Diallo will compete for starting positions on the wings.
Sunderland Predicted Starting XI: Roefs; Mukiele, O’Nien, Alderete, Reinildo; Xhaka, Sadiki; Talbi, Diarra, Le Fee; Brobbey
Manchester United Predicted Starting XI: Lammens; Dalot, Maguire, Martinez, Shaw; Casemiro, Mainoo; Mbeumo, Fernandes, Cunha; Sesko
Match Prediction: Sunderland 1-2 Manchester United
Sunderland's recent record at home has been poor, with only one win and four losses in their last five matches. However, with a sold-out stadium for their second-to-last home game of the season, the Black Cats will be highly motivated. Under manager Régis Le Bris, the team still holds ambitions of securing a top-seven finish.
The home side will be confident in their ability to find the net, especially considering Manchester United has failed to keep a clean sheet in eight of their last ten Premier League fixtures. Despite this, the visitors are in strong form and are expected to have the edge, likely outscoring their opponents to claim a hard-fought victory.
