Moses Shumah Sends Clear Signal to Benni McCarthy After Record-Breaking Campaign
Harambee Stars striker Moses Shumah continued his hot streak over the weekend, scoring his 18th goal to give Power Dynamos a crucial victory over rivals Nkana in the highly anticipated Kitwe derby.
The victory was crucial for Moses Shumah and his club as it extended their lead at the top of the MTN Super League to seven points.
Played at Ndola's Levy Mwanawasa Stadium, the match began as a tightly contested affair. Both teams created opportunities in a fast-paced first half, but neither could break the deadlock before halftime.
Power Dynamos emerged with renewed purpose in the second half, utilising counterattacks to pressure a determined Nkana side.
Their breakthrough came in the 52nd minute when Ronel Manyanga set up Shumah, who made no mistake in finding the back of the net.
Nkana fought hard for an equaliser and came agonisingly close in the 80th minute when Idriss Mbombo's powerful header struck the woodwork. Despite their efforts, a resolute Dynamos defence held firm to secure their first derby win since 2023.
Moses Shumah Speaks After Scoring Against
The man of the hour, Moses Shumah, became the first player to score 18 goals in a single MTN Super League season since Idriss Mbombo in 2018. Reflecting on his achievement, Moses Shumah remained humble.
He pointed out that the record is a testament to his progress so far, something that Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy should take note of.
"I didn’t know the record, but I can say I feel good," he commented as quoted by Bola News. "My aim was to beat last season’s record; I scored 17 goals, so this season I was trying to beat that. It means I am improving as an individual, and if you score such a number, it means you are pushing your team somewhere better."
Coaches React to Result
After the match, Nkana's assistant coach, Josphat Nkhoma, expressed his disappointment, believing his team deserved more. "It’s the name of the game. We’ve lost, but the better team lost today," he stated.
"Everyone was watching the game; we saw how we started. In the first 15 minutes, we wanted a killer punch. Idriss Mbombo, you saw he missed a sitter. I think we controlled most of the game; in defence, we were solid, in midfield, we were fluid, and the strikers were eager to score despite missing chances."
In contrast, Power Dynamos head coach Oswald Mutapa, celebrating his first Kitwe derby victory, focused on the bigger picture.
"For me, forget about the derby; it’s the three points that matter," he said. "We get the three points, and we consolidate our position at the top of the league. That’s what we need."
The victory solidifies Power Dynamos' position at the league summit with 58 points from 26 games, holding two games in hand as they continue their title defence.
Meanwhile, Nkana's struggles continue, as they sit 12th with 31 points and are now winless in their last five matches.
