Ryan Ogam: Third Coach but Same Problems for Harambee Stars Striker in Austria
Kenyan striker Ryan Ogam is now on his third coach at his Austrian club Wolfsberger AC but hopes of an immediate lifeline went up in smoke.
Wolfsberger unveiled Thomas Silberberger this week to replace Ismail Atalan, who was sacked after a poor run of form plunged the club into the relegation zone.
Atalan had been hired last November to take over from Dietmar Kuhbauer who welcomed Ogam to the club at the start of the season.
But just like Kuhbauer and his successor Atalan, Kuhbauer has opted against starting Ogam as he did not include the Kenyan in his squad for his team’s goalless draw with SV Ried on Saturday, his first match in charge.
It means Ogam still has his work cut out to convince his bosses that he is good enough for the senior team despite his recent impressive spell with Harambee Stars when he scored twice in two games in the FIFA Series last month.
Complicated Situation for Ryan Ogam
Having started life in Austria with a 14-minute appearance from the bench on October 4, Ogam would get 46 minutes in an Austrian Cup match against SKU Amstetten on October 29 but after that, he disappeared from the horizon.
The striker was called up for Harambee Stars’ friendly matches against Equatorial Guinea and Senegal in November but by this time, he had missed four straight games, two of which he did not even make the squad.
By the end of the year, Ogam had not played eight straight top flight matches and his situation did not change in the new year as he had missed all eight matches Wolfsberger had played in 2026.
It would emerge that the striker had been dropped to the reserve team for reasons yet to be known and he now trains and plays with the second-string side, who he has featured five times so far, four of them this year, scoring three goals in the Regional League Central.
Since returning from last month’s international break, Ogam is yet to play even for the reserve side, another issue of concern which makes his path back to the senior team more complicated, even under a new coach, when it was hoped that he would witness an immediate change in fortunes.
