Michael Olunga: Harambee Stars Captain Baffled by Questionable Officiating in Local Match

Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga has expressed dismay at the low level of officiating in Kenya after his MOFA FC was on the end of some questionable decisions.

MOFA’s National Super League match with Kabati Youth, which ended 1-1 on Thursday, witnessed some drama from the match official.

The Homa Bay-based side scored after just four minutes through Kevin Bulimo but it was not until late that the officiating drama was witnessed.

In the 83rd minute, Kabati Youth were awarded a contentious penalty after very minimal contact in the box, leading to protest from MOFA players, but the referee stood his ground, and Vincent Oduor scored for the home side to draw level.

However, the officiating drama continued moments later when the referee flashed a second yellow card to Kevin Mwaura but the player was not sent off, leaving the opposing players and fans bemused.

Olunga is among those who have voiced their displeasure over the refereeing decisions that coast MOFA a win having endured a two-match winless run prior to the game.

“Even the two other players in the box were wondering why he didn't pass the ball while the referee had other ideas,” Olunga commented regarding the penalty incident. “Gave a player two yellow cards and never sent him off,” the Harambee Stars captain further observed.

This is just the latest in a catalogue of questionable decisions from match officials at all levels of Kenyan football which has left clubs, coaches and fans frustrated, leading to some ugly incidents where referees face attacks from irate supporters.
