RB Leipzig have made contact with Liverpool over a potential transfer of midfielder Harvey Elliott with the Bundesliga side seeking replacements for Dutch international Xavi Simons.

The 22-year-old English youngster has become a target for the German side, with initial discussions already held, according to The Athletic.

The move comes amid doubt over the future of Simons, with the attacking midfielder left out of Leipzig's recent pre-season friendly squad.

Chelsea are trying to secure the Dutchman's long-term future, which would leave a gap in Leipzig's attacking midfield — one that they believe Elliott can fill.

"It's just something that me and the team on my behalf have to have a discussion about, because I'm getting to an age now where I'm 22, I'll be 23 next season, and I don't really want to be losing years of my career, because it's a short career," Elliott said this summer, hinting at a possible departure as per Daily Mail.

First-team opportunities have been hard to come by for Elliott at Liverpool, with the young player starting just two Premier League matches last season — both after the Reds had already clinched the title.

And with the addition of German prodigy Florian Wirtz, his path to consistent minutes seems even more challenging. Despite his limited starts, Elliott remains a fans' favourite after 147 games for the Merseyside giants since joining as a teenager.

Leipzig View Elliott as Perfect Simons Replacement

RB Leipzig view Elliott as a player who can add energy and creativity to their midfield, especially if Simons departs.

The Englishman further improved his burgeoning reputation this summer by being voted Player of the Tournament at the Under-21 European Championship, where he netted five goals in six games as England defended their title.

The Bundesliga club have not been shy about following up on their interest, making contact with Liverpool to negotiate the form of a deal.

Sources indicate the Reds would be willing to sell the midfielder for £40 million if a buy-back clause is included, or £50 million outright without one.

"If that's to go elsewhere, then that's something I'll need to decide and I'll just have to wait and see what happens," Elliott added.

While the potential move could be seen as a loss to Liverpool fans, it could be the best thing for Elliott's development as he aims to play regular football in one of Europe's top leagues.

His performances at youth international level and flashes of brilliance in a red jersey have demonstrated that he has the talent — but he now requires the platform.

Liverpool Still Open to Offers as Summer Shake-Up Continues

Liverpool, who have just finalized the signing of Florian Wirtz, are in the process of a bit of a midfield revamp under their new system.

With competition hot and depth in abundance, Elliott may be further down the pecking order, which brings a possibility of a move overseas.

Elliott played on Monday as Liverpool hosted two consecutive friendlies against Athletic Club at Anfield, scoring in a 4-1 win.

But sources close to the player believe that his run-out doesn't automatically shoot him onto the part in Klopp's thinking for the coming season.

"I just want to improve and be the best version of myself and the best player I can be," said Elliott.

"I just have to see what happens."

With the transfer window open and Leipzig wanting a quick resolution, Elliott's future could be one of the transfers to monitor this summer.
