Kenya’s U17 national team, the Junior Stars, are gearing up for one of the most important matches in their youth football history as they prepare to face Tanzania in the semi-finals of the ongoing CECAFA U17 AFCON qualifiers.

The stakes could not be higher: victory will secure a coveted place at the 2026 U17 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

For Kenya, achieving this milestone would make them the first Kenyan side to ever qualify for the tournament at this age category, adding further weight to an already high-pressure encounter.

The Junior Stars finished second in Group A after collecting crucial points but narrowly losing 1–0 to Ethiopia, who topped the pool and will now take on Uganda in the first semi-final.

Despite the setback, Kenya showed consistency and resilience throughout the group phase, qualities that will be needed in abundance as they meet a Tanzanian side widely considered tournament favourites.

Tanzania, who topped their group with convincing performances, have built a reputation in recent years for producing disciplined, physically strong youth teams capable of competing at the highest regional levels.

We Must Match Tanzania’s Endavor - Muluya

Kenya head coach William Muluya, who has guided a young but spirited squad through the qualifiers, was candid about the challenge ahead. He praised Tanzania as “worthy opponents” known for their experience, physicality, and commitment, but also made it clear that Kenya are not stepping onto the pitch as underdogs without belief.

“We also want to put a good show before the final whistle,” Muluya noted, emphasising the importance of playing with courage.

“It is a final before the final. Whoever wins will qualify for the AFCON. Winning it will make it easier to play a final relaxed. Tournament favourites, but we are a winning team with fighting spirit, so we have to give it everything on the pitch.”

Let the Best Team Win - Nikolaus

On the opposite side, Tanzania coach Elieneza Nicolaus expressed his own excitement and readiness for the showdown. Referring to Kenya as “relatives,” he acknowledged the deep footballing and cultural ties between the two nations, adding further emotional intensity to the tie.

“Tomorrow is the day,” Nikolaus said. “It is a national matter. Everyone has prepared well and we say let the best team win.”
