Riveiro is remembered for his highly-successful spell at Pirates between 2022 and 2024 when he won five trophies and led them to back-to-back second place in the league after years of struggle.

The Buccaneers faithful hold the Spanish coach in high regard following the attractive style of play that he implemented, his trust in youth after offering several of them opportunities in the first team, as well as the discipline and professionalism that he instilled at the club.

Riveiro left Pirates for Egyptian giants Al Ahly but he lasted just four months at the Club of the Century before he was sacked, having signed a two-year contract, and he has not been seen since.

Why is Jose Riveiro Coming to South Africa?

According to South African outlet Soccer Laduma, Riveiro is set to make a comeback to South Africa but he will not be coming for a coaching job but rather a product promotion tour.

Riveiro will reportedly be one of the high-profile guests for the Carling Knockout Cup Campaign set to be held in Johannesburg next month, joining Carling Black Label Brand Director Kerryn Greenleaf and football analyst Simphiwe Dludlu at the event.

The event will provide updates on the 2025 Carling Black Label Cup with Riveiro having led the Carling All-Star team on two successive occasions during his stint at Pirates.

The Carling Black Label Cup is played days after the Carling Knockout final, one of the three cup tournaments contested in South Africa, and this year, Riveiro’s ex-team Pirates will contest the final with Marumo Gallants on Saturday December 6 at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.
