Harambee Stars Abroad: Michael Olunga Back in the Goals, Ryan Ogam Benched as Jonah Ayunga Suffers Defeat

Kenyan strikers had contrasting fortunes in their respective leagues abroad last weekend with Michael Olunga celebrating a goal.

Olunga returned to goal scoring form for his club Al Arabi as they won 3-1 away to Al Sadd on Saturday, netting his third goal of the season.

The Harambee Stars captain drew Al Arabi level after 43 minutes after they had been pegged back by Al Sadd’s Akram Afif four minutes earlier. The lanky Kenyan striker took advantage of a delivery from the right wing before he rose highest to head in powerfully.

Al Arabi added two further goals to record a third straight win in all competitions and they have now moved to seventh place on the Qatar Stars League table with seven points from two matches, 10 behind leaders Qatar SC.

Meanwhile, while Olunga was scoring goals, Jonah Ayunga was suffering defeat in Scotland as his St Mirren were beaten 3-1 away to Dundee United on Saturday.

Ayunga was in the starting XI for Steve Robinson’s side and they looked to be on course for a win when they went ahead after 18 minutes through Dan Nlundulu but the home side equalised just before halftime through Zac Sapsford.

Late drama then ensued as Alex Gogic was sent off, reducing St Mirren to 10 men in the 83rd minute, and from the resultant penalty, Dundee extended their lead one minute later.

Craig Sibbald would hammer the final nail in St Mirren’s coffin with a 90th minute goal to secure the win with the Saints now going three games without a win to slip to ninth place on the table.

Elsewhere, Austrian Bundesliga side Wolfsberger AC returned to winning ways but Kenyan striker Ryan Ogam played no part.

For a second straight game, Ogam was an unused substitute, with his team winning 3-1 away to league leaders Sturm Graz, which boosted their title aspirations, as they moved to fourth spot on 20 points from 11 games, just one behind the table toppers.
