One of the most anticipated fixtures in Kenyan football is fast approaching as the 99th edition of the Mashemeji Derby draws near.
Both AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia in superb form hence a stage is set for another thrilling encounter that promises to capture the passion, rivalry, and pride of Nairobi’s two biggest clubs.
AFC Leopards are currently unbeaten after six rounds in the 2025/26 SportPesa Premier League season.
Francis Ambani’s men have an impressive run stretching back fourteen matches (6W 8D), a streak that dates to their 1–0 loss to Posta Rangers on April 18 last season.
Under new leadership and revitalized spirit, the blue and white side has found consistency and confidence rarely seen in recent years.
However, Gor Mahia remain equally formidable as the record Kenyan champions sit second on the table with thirteen points, just one ahead of Leopards, and have shown flashes of their trademark dominance under pressure.
With the two giants set to clash on November 30 at Nyayo Stadium, tension and excitement are already building among fans and stakeholders.
“AFC Leopards are on a good run. Let’s admit they’re awake and performing well, and as a Gor Mahia stakeholder, I respect good football. But trust me, form counts for nothing when it comes to the Mashemeji Derby,” wrote Gor Mahia vice-chair Sally Bollo in a passionate message ahead of the clash.
History and Rivalry Define the Contest
The rivalry between Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards stretches back to May 5, 1968, when the two clubs first met.
Over five decades later, their duels remain the heartbeat of Kenyan football. Gor Mahia boast a record 21 Kenya Premier League titles, while Leopards have lifted the trophy twelve times.
Beyond silverware, the Mashemeji Derby represents a clash of cultures, pride, and identity for two sets of passionate supporters.
Bolo invoked that rich history to remind Leopards of the weight that comes with facing Gor Mahia.
“On 30th November 2025, we write another chapter of this great rivalry. Our green and white wave will paint the stadium and once the whistle blows, it’s about heart, history and who truly owns Nairobi. Mashemeji, enjoy your streak for now. Gor Mahia is coming and we come with pride, passion, legacy, and the full weight of the badge. In the derby, there is no luck, it’s K’Ogalo till full-time,” she declared.
Both teams face crucial fixtures before the derby. Gor Mahia will play Police FC, Kariobangi Sharks, and Tusker, while AFC Leopards battle Mara Sugar, Murang’a Seal, and Kariobangi Sharks.
Each side will be eager to maintain momentum heading into what could be a defining match of the season.
