A late own goal from Homeboyz's Peter Thiong'o was the decisive moment that sent the league leaders nine points clear at the top of the table.

Coming off a significant 1-0 win against arch-rivals AFC Leopards in the Mashemeji Derby last week, Gor Mahia were determined to maintain their momentum as the season nears its conclusion. The victory elevates them to 64 points, while second-placed AFC Leopards sit on 55 points with a game in hand.

The match appeared destined for a goalless draw until the final minutes. In a dramatic turn of events, Thiong'o inadvertently directed the ball into his own net while attempting a clearance, gifting Gor Mahia a hard-fought win.

The first half was a cagey affair, with the first significant opportunity arriving in the 25th minute. Gor Mahia, chasing a record 22nd league title, nearly went ahead when Paul Ochouga delivered a precise volley from the left wing. However, Shariff Musa failed to convert, sending his shot over the crossbar with the goal at his mercy.

Gor Mahia Leave it Late Against Homeboyz

Homeboyz responded with a promising attack in the 39th minute. Thiong'o made a powerful run down the right flank and delivered a dangerous cross, but it narrowly missed striker Derrick Otanga as Gor's goalkeeper, Bryne Omondi, intervened to clear the threat. The teams went into halftime deadlocked.

The second half continued in a similar vein, with a resilient Homeboyz side effectively neutralising Gor Mahia's attack and controlling the tempo. Clear-cut chances remained scarce for both teams.

The breakthrough finally came with less than two minutes of stoppage time remaining. Substitute Ebenezer Assifuah drove down the right wing and sent a cross into the penalty area. Under pressure, Thiong'o attempted to clear the ball but misjudged his effort, resulting in the decisive own goal.

In the final moments, Gor Mahia were reduced to ten men after Patrick Morrison received a second yellow card. Despite the numerical advantage, Homeboyz could not capitalize and failed to find an equalizer before the final whistle.

With four matches left, Gor Mahia now need just seven more points to secure their 22nd title provided their closest rivals drop points along the way.
