In an interview with GQ Hype, Guardiola revealed his decision to step away from coaching once his contract with the Citizens concludes. He stopped short of confirming whether this represents permanent retirement or a temporary break.

"I know that after this experience with Manchester City, I will stop. This is certain, it's decided, more than decided. For how long? A year, two, ten? I don't know. I know that I need to disconnect, to dedicate time to myself, to listen to my body, simply because I need to stop and focus on myself."

"My life has already brought incredible surprises: I've coached in Germany and England, I went to Barcelona, both as a player and a coach. These are things I never imagined. We always think we have control, but then something comes along that forces us to make a choice. And then you realize that not everything depends on you. So now, my plan is clear: to stop. And then, we'll see," he initially stated.

He continued: "This is the sport. To lose more than you win. It's impossible to win every competition. Michael Jordan won six rings in fifteen years. He lost more than he won. Tiger Woods won 14 Majors, but played in more than a hundred. I've played in 16 leagues, I've won 13."

Guardiola has been coaching at senior level for 17 years since his first job with boyhood club Barcelona in 2008, where he managed for four years before taking a one-year sabbatical after which he coached German giants Bayern Munich from 2013-2016. He took over City in the summer of 2016 and has steered the club to great success during his nine-year tenure.

Guardiola signed a new two-year deal at City this year, taking him up to 2027 which looks like when he will bid farewell to the game.
