Ben Stanley Omondi has recently struggled for consistent game time at Gor Mahia, finding himself on the sidelines in several matches as competition for attacking places continues to intensify.

Charles Akonnor has made it clear that the striker’s omission is purely based on merit and current form rather than any external factors within the squad.

Despite delivering an impressive performance during his recent call-up to the Harambee Stars national team for the FIFA Series, Ben Stanley Omondi has not yet been able to translate that same level of impact into his club displays.

In the meantime, Jackson Dwang has seized the opportunity in attack, delivering strong performances that have firmly strengthened his claim to the starting striker position.

The Gor Mahia coach explained that the technical bench has generally aimed to give all players opportunities to feature, but emphasised that selection ultimately depends on performance levels during those chances.

Charles Akonnor noted that when players are unable to meet the required standards, it becomes natural for others within the squad to step in and take advantage of the opportunity, as competition for places remains ongoing.

Speaking specifically about Ben Stanley Omondi, Akonnor observed that the forward has already been given opportunities in the team, including a spell as a first-choice starter after Austin Odhiambo’s injury.

However, he failed to impress, and since then, another player has taken advantage of the vacancy and performed well enough to retain the position.

“Almost giving everybody the chance to play. Those who were not able to perform well, I think, if I ask you, you all know, but we have to keep it going. Our duty is mainly to improve every player,” Charles Akonnor said.

“And so, when you get a chance, and you're not able to do well, it means somebody else is knocking, and that person will get a chance. If you talk about Stanley, Stanley has had chances to play. He was a starter when Austin left until he got injured. And now somebody else has taken the position. And so, he needs to fight and get back into it.”
