AFC Leopards Claim Statement Win Over Murang'a Seal to Close In on Gor Mahia in Title Race
AFC Leopards closed the gap on league leaders Gor Mahia with a convincing 2-0 win over Murang’a Seal in a Kenya Premier League clash at the Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday, April 5.
Heading into their match against Murang’a Seal, AFC Leopards had secured a narrow 1–0 victory against Kariobangi Sharks in their previous league outing.
On their part, Murang'a Seal were seeking to bounce back from a narrow 1–0 defeat to Shabana FC at Gusii Stadium. That loss extended their winless run to three matches.
Murang'a Seal vs AFC Leopards: Match Report
In the fifth minute, AFC Leopards saw their first attempt at goal go wide as Tyson Otieno's free kick sailed off target.
On their part, Murang'a Seal were dominating possession and pressing hard in the early stages, keeping their eyes firmly set on an opening breakthrough.
However, in the seventh minute, a dangerous cross from James Kinyanjui on the right wing forced the hosts' goalkeeper into a punch to clear the ball back into play.
In the 13th minute, AFC Leopards earned two successive corners, but both opportunities were resolutely cleared by the hosts' defence.
In the 22nd minute, Victor Haki sliced through the box with skilful dribbling for Murang'a Seal, but his final delivery was intercepted by the defence.
Haki was on fire for Murang'a Seal, utilising his superior dribbling to leave the defence scrambling and forcing a foul to halt his dangerous run in the 28th minute.
In the 31st minute, AFC Leopards continue to push for an opening goal, but the match remains deadlocked without a breakthrough. The match remained goalless as both teams headed into the break following a tightly contested first half.
Coming back in for the second half, AFC Leopards were keen on making a mark in the match. In the 55th minute, Ronald Sichenje broke the deadlock to give AFC Leopards the lead with a well-taken goal after being set up nicely by Samuel Ssenyonjo.
In the 58th minute, Michael Macharia unleashed a powerful long-range effort for Murang'a Seal in an attempt to equalise, but the strike sailed just wide of the post as they trailed AFC Leopards 1–0.
Shortly after, Murang'a Seal were handed a lifeline when King Joe Waithira was brought down inside the box, prompting the referee to point to the spot for a clear penalty.
However, James Ssetuba pulled off a wonderful save to deny the hosts an equaliser and maintain the lead for AFC Leopards.
In the 68th minute, AFC Leopards launched a dangerous 3-v-2 attack through Tyson Otieno, James Kinyanjui, and Samuel Ssenyonjo, but the latter’s final effort was saved by the keeper.
AFC Leopards made a double substitution, bringing on Hassan Beja and Brian Nyongesa to replace Ronald Sichenje and Fredrick Alushula in the 72nd minute. Just a few minutes in, Hassan Beja added another goal for AFC Leopards.
Despite last-minute efforts to press on, Murang'a Seal were unable to make an impact. Now AFC Leopards have 55 points, just behind Gor Mahia who have 57.
