The Ghana Football Association recently parted ways with head coach Otto Addo just 72 days before the tournament in North America, following a series of disappointing friendly results.

With the Black Stars preparing for their opening World Cup match against Panama, speculation has intensified over who will take charge of the team during the tournament.

Charles Akonnor, a former Ghana coach, has emerged as a familiar name in discussions, while fans have also called for experienced tactician Pitso Mosimane. Other high-profile names, including Joachim Löw and Hervé Renard, have also been mentioned as possible candidates.

Charles Akonnor Breaks Silence on Black Stars Links

Speaking about links to the role, Charles Akonnor has insisted that his full attention remains on his role at Gor Mahia, where he said he is pleased with the team’s progress as they continue their push for the league title.

Charles Akonnor emphasised that his current responsibilities take priority and that he is fully committed to achieving success with the Kenyan club.

The former Ghana national team coach acknowledged his past involvement with the Black Stars, noting that any speculation linking him with a return should not be viewed negatively. He added that such reports are natural, given his history with the national side and his strong connection to Ghana.

Akonnor also expressed his continued affection for his home country and the national team, saying he remains supportive of their efforts on the international stage, including the upcoming World Cup.

“I am with Gor Mahia. I'm very happy. I'm doing well. We are fighting for the title, and that is where my focus is, and so nothing comes before that. I was once the coach of the national team. If there's a link, it's not anything negative,” Charles Akonnor said.

“It's not anything bad. It's good. I'm a Ghanaian. I love my country. I love the national team. I will support them in the World Cup. And that will be it. But for now, my focus is on Gor Mahia.”

Gor Mahia are the current Kenya Premier League leaders with 57 points, ahead of AFC Leopards, who have 52 points. Kakamega Homeboyz are third with 45 points.
