Baron Ochieng Missing as Zamalek Suffer Cup Heartbreak to Arch Rivals Al Ahly
Harambee Stars defender Baron Ochieng watched from a distance as his club’s chances of winning a first trophy of the season went up in smoke when Zamalek lost the Egyptian Super Cup to Al Ahly.
Zamalek came up short yet again in the Egyptian Super Cup when they lost 2-0 in the high stakes game played in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates on Sunday.
Moroccan winger Achraf Bencharki scored the first goal for Al Ahly after 44th minutes before midfielder Marwan Atteya sealed the win in the 72nd with the Red Devils totally dominating the contest against a toothless Zamalek.
Ahly coach Jess Thorup fielded the same starting line-up that beat Ceramica Cleopatra in the semi-finals and reaped massive rewards while Zamalek interim coach Ahmed Abdel-Raouf made a host of changes from the side that overcame Pyramids FC in the last four, a decision that backfired.
Zamalek Long Wait for Super Cup Continues
It was yet another match that Ochieng was not involved in as he remains with just one game under his belt for the 14-time Egyptian champions since his signing in September.
Zamalek last won the Super Cup in 2020 and were looking to end that long drought but Al Ahly, who had claimed four straight heading into Sunday’s final, added a fifth on the bounce and 16th overall, to assert their dominance.
It leaves Zamalek with the Egyptian Cup and Egyptian Premier League as the domestic trophies to contest while they will also be fighting for CAF Confederation Cup glory after making it to the group stage.
Ochieng will now shift focus to Harambee Stars after earning a call-up to Benni McCarthy’s squad for friendly matches against Equatorial Guinea and Senegal this month.
