Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has ruled out the possibility of becoming the next permanent manager of Chelsea, saying he will not return there.

The Italian manager was in charge of Chelsea for 109 games between the 2009/10 season and the 2010/11 season and has been linked with a return to the club following Graham Potter's sacking, but the 63-year-old has now publicly turned down the chance.

What Ancelotti said

Frank Lampard is currently the interim manager of Chelsea, taking over after Potter's termination; however, Chelsea are still actively in search of a permanent manager, and Ancelotti has been linked with the role.

The Real Madrid boss was asked about links to Chelsea, and he played down a return to Stamford Bridge.

He expressed his love for the club, saying he is a fan and that he enjoyed his stay there, but he explicitly stated that he will not be returning to the club.

Carlo went on to praise Frank Lampard, who he coached while he was at Chelsea, and tipped the former England international to do a good job.

Lampard eyes permanent role

The news was announced on the club's official Twitter account on Thursday, bringing a temporary end to the search for a new manager with Lampard now caretaker manager until June.

Frank Lampard, who was sacked by Everton after a dismal run of results, expressed delight at the opportunity and hinted at a longer stay at the helm if possible.

“I will do my best, then we will see what happens," he said.

It won't be my decision [long-term]. I understand I will be asked a lot, I've got my eyes open. I'm excited as there’s lot of talent here.

“It was easy to accept this job for me; this is my club”.

Chelsea have a crucial run of fixtures on the horizon, and it is imperative that Lampard hits the ground running.
