AFC Leopards Brought Back to Earth as Mathare United Thrashing Dash Title Hopes
AFC Leopards missed a chance to move to within four points of Gor Mahia in the FKF Premier League title race following a 4-1 loss to Mathare United at Nyayo Stadium on Saturday.
Leopards' late collapse allowed Mathare to hand them the big defeat to leave coach Fred Ambani with hard questions to answer.
In a game that had few chances in the first half, the best of them fell to Ingwe with Victor Omune squandering a couple before he scored.
There were not many incidents of note in the first half until on the stroke of halftime when Omune missed from close range.
Against the run of play, Fredrick Alushula whipped in a good cross and Omune met it first time in the box but somehow failed to find the target with a diving header.
Shortly after, there was a moment of worry for Leopards when John Makwata scored but he was in an offside position.
In the second half, Mathare's Musa Masika attempted from distance and saw his effort sail over the bar and shortly after, Omune missed from close range.
However, in the 61st minute, Ronald Sichenje found Omune in the box and the Leopards skipper made no mistake.
Ingwe, however, became casual in their approach and got punished dearly.
Failure to close down the Mathare attackers yielded the first goal for the slum boys when the Leopards goalkeeper James Ssetuba spilled a ball before Kevin Ouru equalised from the rebound.
It soon turned from bad to worse for Leopards as another defensive blunder allowed Mathare to score.
Randi Bakari lost the ball and his man and Ouru curled home beautifully past Ssetuba to give Mathare a 2-1 lead nine minutes from time.
The goal avalanche continued for Mathare as moments later, Isaac Omweri scored from a corner after Leopards failed to deal with the cross.
It got even bad for Ambani's men in stoppage time when another defensive blunder allowed John Kamau's men to score the fourth through Ian Omondi.
The defeat left Leopards' fans angry and they threw objects on the playing surface to express their anger while Ambani had to be whisked away by security personnel as an irate mob, which had now made its way to the pitch, demanded answers from him.
Ingwe missed a chance to move to within four points of leaders Gor Mahia and they are now on 43 points from 23 games, seven behind K'Ogalo, who can open up a 10-point lead with victory on Sunday.
