'A Gift For All Women' - Eliud Kipchoge Backs Faith Kipyegon to Make History
Marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge has backed 1500 world record holder Faith Kipyegon to succeed in her second Breaking4 attempt.
Faith Kipyegon, the three-time Olympic 1500m champion, attempted to shatter the four-minute mile for a woman.
The highly anticipated event, dubbed ‘Breaking4,’ was staged at Stade Sébastien Charléty in Paris, France, on Thursday, June 26, 2025.
Under floodlights and with a tailored support crew of pacemakers and state-of-the-art technology, Faith Kipyegon launched her audacious assault on the sub-4-minute mark. Faith Kipyegon fell short, clocking 4:06.42 to cross the finish line.
By pushing the ceiling of women's running even higher, Faith Kipyegon confirmed that the four-minute dream is not a matter of 'if,' but 'when,' and Eliud Kipchoge completely agrees with that.
Eliud Kipchoge: I Was Happy to See Faith Kipyegon Attempt That
In an interview with The Athletic, Eliud Kipchoge credits his long-term coach, Patrick Sang and his dedicated team in Kaptagat, Kenya, for his sustained success.
Now a veteran of the sport, he has embraced the role of a mentor, guiding the next generation of athletes, including fellow Kenyan superstar Faith Kipyegon.
Eliud Kipchoge and Faith Kipyegon, both members of the Patrick Sang-coached NN Running Team, share a common drive for breaking barriers.
"I’m really proud because, if you get your teammate to really think and dare to try, it’s perfect. I was happy to see that," Eliud Kipchoge commented.
He remains confident in her ability to eventually succeed. "I think that was not the last time she will try. Six seconds actually is not far. I think next year, or the year after, she will come back again and make history. That will be a gift for all women."
As Eliud Kipchoge shifts his focus from personal records to new challenges, he reflects on his own monumental achievements. A framed photo of him crossing the finish line in Vienna during his sub-two-hour marathon hangs in his home.
"That’s my favourite," he shared. "Winning major marathons, running for that long, two world records… I mean, it’s what makes me appreciate that sport is a beautiful thing."
Eliud Kipchoge’s belief in Faith Kipyegon serves as a reminder that history-making feats are built on persistence, and with champions inspiring champions, her pursuit of the sub-4 milestone feels closer than ever.
